Cleft Palate

Off the beaten path

...Sam's cleft palate (in his soft palate) was not discovered until his two week check up. (Eventhough he spent 11 days in the NICU - and that is another story in itself!) No wonder he had such a hard time feeding. I remember asking one of the nurses why formula would come out of his nose as well as his mouth(sometimes only his nose) whenever he spit up (which was quite a bit due to the reflux). They told me that was normal. Funny thing, I didn't remember any of my other kids ever "spitting up" out their noses. The moral of the story is...trust your instinct, if you think there is something else going on, be your child's advocate. Insist your concerns be investigated.

Sam had surgery to repair the cleft in his soft palate at about 6 months. We were terrified Sam would hate his splints and be miserable for the duration, but he got along just fine with them on. Eventually he did figure out how to get them off though.
