Screening for Down Syndrome and Amniocentesis

Amniocentesis is one of the more accurate prenatal tests for Down Syndrome. It requires removal of a small amount of amniotic fluid via a thin needle introduced through the mother's abdomen into the uterus. This is done with a local anesthetic and the guidance of ultrasound (for correct placement of the needle).

The fluid contains some cells from the baby and by studying these cells knowledge can be gained of the baby's gender, genetic anomalies, etc. Unfortunately the results take about 3 to 4 weeks to get back (nail biting time!). There is also about 1 in 200 chance the mother-to-be will miscarry. Not willing to take that chance, we opted to bite our nails for 5 months!
