Down Syndrome Hearing Concerns

Down Syndrome Hearing Loss

Many babies with Down Syndrome experience some type of hearing problem in one or both ears.In kids with Down Syndrome hearing loss can be conductive, sensorineural, or a bit of both. Hearing is critical for the development of speech, as well as language. So it follows that a child must have good hearing before he or she can learn to speak. Most cases of hearing loss in children with Down Syndrome can be resolved or at least improved with medical or surgical intervention and/or the use of hearing aids. For this reason it is extremely important for all babies with Down Syndrome to have a complete hearing evaluation in the first few months of life! I cannot stress enough how important this is. Our kiddos already have enough difficulties to overcome, why not correct something so easily taken care of.. So, if your baby has not had a hearing evaluation, for whatever reason, talk to your doctor.
