Education and kids with Down Syndrome

In the United States, from the time a baby with Down Syndrome is born until he is three years old he is eligible to receive services from an Early Childhood Intervention program free of charge. These services include, but are not limited to, physical, occupational, and speech therapy, nutrition counsel, visits from a nurse, and more. I would recommend that any new parents of a baby with Down syndrome contact their local Early Childhood program shortly after the birth of their baby in order to get things started.

Once the child turns three, his journey through the public school system begins. Some parents may choose to send their child to a private school, such as a school especially for children with Down Syndrome. If you choose the public school system, you will learn a whole new language. Sam has been going to school (preschool) for two years now and it is continuously a learning experience for both of us. IEPs, ARDs, and more. Its a whole new world, which we will try to simplify a bit here, one small piece at a time.
